NDITBIO-BELOBIO-TKBIO

GROUPBIO

The Crown of Thorns was originally dreamed-up to be a "super-group of Christian emcees from Calgary".

The dream came to be after realizing how many were out there at the 1999 Hip Hop Show that took place at the Jubilee Christian Centre. Terakoza (Tarik Robinson) & NDIT (Nathan Lenet, together known as Zayin Ascension), Size of the ETC (Tim Middlemiss), Bishop (Nii Gyamfi) and a new guy in town named Belo (David Brunning) were in theory the core members of the group.

Bishop was focusing on solo efforts and Size consistently missed meetings, so the group ended up being Terakoza, NDIT and Belo. The official formation was in January of 2000. The first show was at the Soul Tattoo later that month.

By that time the first four tracks on the CD Journey Is Destination, principally featuring the ETC (Kwad, Size & Ecto) had already been recorded. Those tracks were Ancient Desert, Call to the Entrenched, Le Visage de la Verite and MC's Manuscript.

Early Spring 2000 we were e-mailed by the rock group "Crown of Thorns" who had copyrighted the name so we added "Crew" to the title to avoid getting legal action.

A lot of planning, bonding and a few shows followed. The rest of the 8 tracks on the CD were sporadically recorded over 10 or 11 months. It was a tough process with lots of ups and downs, but finally the project was completed in time for the "Mic Check" Hip Hop Night 2000.

In early 2001, the crew performed a number of shows, including events at the Bamboo Club and Rocky Mountain College. Tarik and Bishop did a couple of performances in Red Deer. Nathan and Tarik went down to San Francisco for a missions trip and rocked a few songs.

The main reason we do what we do is to bridge the gap between Christ and today's youth through the medium of hip hop. We're always striving for improvement and being real with who we are in our performances and recordings.
